Even the Thai-res are awesome! Heyooooo

So I know that it must be kind of boring that I haven't been traveling anywhere awesome lately and that I've only been posting stuff about work.  This monsoon season is a real bummer man!  Even though the crazy heavy rains seem to be over, it rains at least once every day.  At this very moment it is sunny but I don't expect that to last.  In addition to the weather, real life has begun!  I have a real job that consumes a lot of my time so I will probably not travel until December.  Classes are going pretty well, although it is a little overwhelming to have to do so many different lesson plans!  Who ever thought work would be so much work?! Anyway, there is one piece of news that I find to be incredibly exciting... after being here for a month (omg, a whole month, isn't that crazy?!) I finally bought a bike.  But not just any bike...
Ooooh whaaat?!  That's right!  It's a Hello Kitty bike!  I am so mature!!!

It is called the Hello Kitty Royal.  How amazing is that?

Living in Asia allows me, as a 27+ year old woman, to own this fantastic bicycle.

OMG look.... even the tire treads have Hello Kitty on them!  When I ride my bike I leave Hello Kitty Tracks!  Ha!

Today I was meeting Anneliese at the coffee shop and I used the phrase "I'm riding the Kitty".

So pretty!

Yes this back seat is fully functional.  Anneliese was riding on it yesterday.  I'm sure that would have been a priceless picture!  Two farangs on a Hello Kitty bike!

So I am pretty obsessed with my new bike, needless to say.  I think maybe I got the farang discount, because it had one price on the tag, he originally told me one price, and then gave me the bike for 200 baht less than that.  He also included this curious bag for free with it... I am saving it to send to America.  First person to say they want it will get it mailed to their house in time for Christmas...
So it's this biking dude using fart power....?!

But possibly the most amazing part is this bizarre little key ring on which hangs this little green man with his little green penis... WTF?!

So here is the photograph for my Thai work visa.... LOL

This is TOO good.  We had to go to this photography studio and get our pictures taken for our Thai work visa / work permit.  Not only have I been massively airbrushed, but I was not wearing those clothes. Technology + photography = amazing and scary.
Hahahhahahahaha love it.  I also love that this will be on file with the Thai government.  How professional am I?!

Thai-riffic Weekend!

Saturday, November 6th, 2010 was an amazing day. At some point soon my roommates and I will be moving out of our house and into a house pretty close by, that is closer to a lot of the other Super English teachers.  When I first saw the house, I was really against it.  The first time I walked into the house, after about 30 seconds I saw a real live scorpion.  It was crazy!  There were also cockroaches every was disgusted.  So we went in a second time, and found the house to be flooded because of the monsoons.  No scorpions, but plenty of standing water and dead cockroaches.  On Friday night I had a freak out about it and was like there’s no way in hell that I am moving in there!  But since I don’t really have much choice, unless I want to give up free housing and pay for it myself, I tried to talk myself into it.  On Saturday morning Anneliese woke up extra early and went to Big C (Thai Walmart) and bought us tons of cleaning supplies.  So like two silly farangs we walked the half mile or so to the house with tons of cleaning stuff in tow.
When we got to the house we decided Anneliese was on inside duty and I was on outside duty.  This meant that I was in charge of cleaning out the front yard, which clearly hd been neglected for more than a few years.  I ended up spending about five solid hours pulling weeds out of the ground!  It was so crazy.  About two hours into it, some random Thai woman came into the front yard, and she clearly didn’t speak English nor have any interest in actually talking to me.  She watched me for a while, smiling and drinking an orange Fanta.  Then she screamed something across the street, to where this woman has a little corner store.  About two minutes later, the woman from the store, who is at least 60 years old, crossed the street with a hoe.  She didn’t say hi to me, didn’t look at me, she just started chopping away at the yard and ripping weeds up by their roots.  I couldn’t believe it!  I tried to indicate to her that I appreciated her brining the hoe but that I could do the actual work on my own.  She was having none of that and just kept going; it was amazing!  She really sped up the process and then all I had to do was bag up everything she had pulled up.
After she finished she went back across the street, until she saw me hacking away at a tree with gardening shears.  She came across the street with a saw and started sawing branches off of the tree!  Again I tried to show my gratitude and that I would be willing to do the physical labor, but this old woman just kept sawing away!  At one point while I was cutting small branches off of an overgrown tree, I noticed this gigantic weird leaf thing that looked like a bunch of leaves stuck together.  I cut it in half, and it turned out to be the mother of all giant red ant nests!  It was so crazy!  They were the size of carpenter ants but bright red.  I freaked out and got the bug killer spray that Anneliese bought at Big C… and that shit must be illegal in the United States because I a-bombed that ant colony!  I sprayed it all over the tree and it literally melted their bodies on contact, it was so crazy.  The old drunkard from next door saw me and started shaking his hands and his head and saying “No!  No!  No!  No!”  I was just like aiiight dude I already killed the shit out of them anyway, whatever, calm down.  Come to find out from Mitch that the old Thai people eat the leaves off of that tree!  Whoops!  Haha.
The ants did, however, get their revenge on me.  I was bit SO many times by those things.  I counted the other night and I think I have something like 16 red ant bites.  They killed at the time and they are still itchy as all hell now.  They are the battle scars of a successful day though!  The yard looks way better and all of the Thai neighbors seemed to approve.  Anneliese did an amazing job on the inside too.  She was cleaning out all of the trash, cleaned all of the windows, and she and John, Janet, and Mitch bleached the kitchen and got all of the flood water out of the house.  By the end of the day we were both filthy.  I mean, I was dirtier than I have been since I got here, and that’s saying a lot.  And I had got cocky – we had running water for about five days in a row, and on Friday night I had got the hot water heater to work and took an almost real shower for the first time since I got here.  I was, of course, counting my chickens before they hatched.  I got home and there was no running water at all.  It was to be a bucket shower for me yet again.
This posed a problem for me because I needed a good scrubbing before going to dinner.  So the one school I work at is called Noonoy.  It is so amazing.  It’s this wicked nice private school owned and operated by a woman named Kru Ying.  Well, Kru means teacher of small teacher so really her name is Ying, but everyone calls her Kru Ying.  Kru Ying is so amazing.  She’s like a real Thai aristocrat.  She’s intelligent, rich, beautiful, fashionable, successful.  She’s just plain awesome.  On Friday at work she invited me to go out to dinner with her and some of the Thai teachers.  It is rude to turn down dinner invitations here, and she asked me out of nowhere, so I said yes.  Then I was extremely scared, because someone that perfect can be somewhat intimidating.  She told me to invite Chris because he used to work at Noonoy, so I said okay and convinced him to come with.  So I had been planning on a great shower before having to get ready for the dinner, but I ended up doing the best I could with a bucket full of cold water that had been sitting there at least a week.
Dinner ended up being amazing!  Kru Ying took us to this extremely nice restaurant on the river, and she brought red wine!  Red wine!  I didn’t even know you could get the stuff here!  And it was really good Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa!  She got both herself and I pretty drunk!  And bought soooo much food!  It was so much fun.  These two really nice, really cool Thai teachers were with us; On and Angel.  On and Angel started to talk about Tesco-Lotus. If Big C is like Walmart, then Tesco-Lotus is like if Target and Home Depot and a small mall had a baby.  Everyone always talks about it and I wanted to go so bad.  I said something along those lines, and On and Angel immediately offered to bring me there on Sunday, and said that Anneliese could come too!  I was so excited!  So my Sunday plans went from more ant bites in the yard of my future home to a trip to Tesco-Lotus with two wicked nice Thai girls!
Bringing me to Tesco-Lotus was a financially bad idea!  I bought a lot of stuff, including some really cute earrings and clothes!  After we left, Angel and On said that we should go to the river market.  We said okay, and I am so glad we did!  It was like the night market, only way cooler.  There were so many food stalls it was amazing.  I had chicken and some really great som tam.  Then we got to do something I have wanted to do since I got here – paint pottery!  It was amazing.
So right now I am sitting at the pad kra prau shop and the adorable lady is trying to close up… have to go!  That was my weekend, what did you guys do?

Monsoon Day! :)

Normally by this time on a Wednesday I would be arriving at Thida to prepare for my Prathom (grade) 3 classes.  Yesterday and today, however, all Thai schools were closed due to Monsoon!  We had 2 monsoon days!  How crazy is that?!  I guess it's not so crazy, it's just very different for me than having a snow day.  And from about midnight on Monday night until 10:00 AM yesterday it was definitely monsooning.  It was crazy!  It was pouring harder than I have ever seen in rain before, except for during a good ol' New England hurricane.  It seemed like the winds were of hurricane strength as well.  Funny enough, it's not even raining at all right now and it hasn't been since late last night, but they went ahead with the cancellation yesterday.  It's kind of a lot like Philly in that way - Ackerman prematurely calls snow days and then it doesn't even snow; Thida calls monsoon days and then it doesn't even rain!
Monday was my first day with Prathom 2 at Thida.  They are soooooo cute!  It's incredible.  There are also about 50 of them in one room, which can produce some truly deafening sound.  Also, I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but I get free lunch at Thida.  And it's good!  On Monday it was this really spicy red curry with green beans and shrimp and white rice.  It was delicious.  And free.  The only price is that you have to clean your own dishes when you are done eating, and I can handle that.  Yesterday was supposed to be my first full day at Noonoy school, where I would have had Prathom 1, 2, 3, 4 and two levels of kindergarten.  Tuesdays are my hardest day and I've yet to experience one!  Next week will be a rude awakening in that sense.  But we do get paid for these monsoon days, so it is awesome in that regard.
I did have my Super English class (of 3-6 year olds) last night, and it was the first class I felt really good about.  They are so young and have such different ability levels, and there are 17 of them in a tiny classroom with me!  The boys can be very naughty and the girls can get bored.  But last night was amazing.  Only 4 kids showed up due to the rain, and we had a great class.  We had fun, they were all excited and engaged the whole time, and they learned how to say "This is _____" which is actually a great accomplishment.  I was on top of the world!  I wish only 4 kids would show up every night!  It's true support for the idea of smaller class sizes!  I guess it is just a learning process and I will have to learn over time how to make what happened with 4 kids happen for 17.  But how the hell do I discipline a naughty Thai kid who can't understand words like "Sit down" "Stop" and "Don't do that!"?
I miss everyone a lot, and it seems like I have been here much longer than only 2 and a half weeks!  I guess it's the amount of change that makes it feel that way.  At least now I can find my own way to most places, talk the price down (a little!) on a tuk tuk, and say a few words.  I guess if I consider how long it's really been, it's going pretty well in terms of adaptation.  Anyway, thanks to all of you who have been reading and commenting.  To Matt, Andy, and Joe: I miss Fels!  Who would've ever thought I'd say that!  Tell everyone that I said hello!  To Johanna and the Deery boys: I miss you guys so much too.  It breaks my hear that little Joel misses me!  I never would have guessed that!  And I heard from my mom that big Joel wants me to send him a scorpion!  Next time there's one in our living room I'll just airmail it to you guys!  I finally sent a postcard to Jack's class... I mailed it on Monday so it will take at least 7-10 days, maybe even more like 14 to get there.  I don't know if you talk to Mr. Purpura often, but I was thinking that maybe some of the higher level kids at Super English might be interested in some kind of a pen pal exchange, even if it's only one letter from each of the classes?  It might be cool.  To Ancharski: Duh I knew it was you!  It would def have been awkward if it was Conal LOL.  And Arm is a mad adorable 3rd grade girl in one of my classes at Thida.  To Joe and Allie: Porn is indeed a girl, I am sorry to say.  To anyone else who I may have forgot, I am sorry!  Hello!  Much love!  Xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxxoxo

Happy Halloween!

Hiiiii Everyone!  Today is Sunday, Oct. 31st, Halloween!  I can't believe tomorrow is November already!  Tomorrow starts my first real full week of work and I am so nervous.  I should be working on lesson plans right now but I needed a little internet break!  And I realized it's been over a week since I wrote last and we can't be having that!  My first week at work was rough.  And I didn't even have a full class load.  This is a lot harder than I expected!  I actually had a freak out Thursday into Friday.  It was a difficult 24 hours and I even cried and said I wanted to go home!  Luckily my boss and everyone I work with is amazing and made me realize I was not only having a Jess freakout, but that it was normal adjustment pains.  So hopefully this evening and tonight I can do some good planning and this week will be a little easier and go a little more smoothly for me.  On a fun note, get a load of this.... so Thai people have a real name.  And that real name is real long, so everyone is given a nickname.  And this nickname seems to almost be a short English word.  Here are some examples of the names of my students and the students of other teachers: Bank, Donut, Mint, Boss, Porn, King Kong, KFC, Nickname, and Arm.  I shit you not.
On a lighter note, my housing situation has improved.  I have made some additions to my room and now it finally looks and feels like a real room.  Check out my new plant!:
Isn't it so pretty?!?!?!
I do, of course, still have many many geckos in my room.  But I actually really like them!  They are wicked cute!  Check out this guy!
So cute!!!!
Oh, so I haven't yet ( I don't think?) mentioned how much amaaaaazing Engrish stuff there is here in Surat Thani.  If you are not familiar with Engrish, it is when non-English speakers try to use English but majorly mess it up, ending up in a really funny situation.  Here is the first of what I am sure will be many, many pictures showing you the hilarious beauty of this phenomenon:
Sorry that it's the wrong way.... I am too lazy to do anything about it right now.  It says "Easy to carry ABORT"  LOL.... Also, I don't know if you can tell, but the white people's heads are clearly not the heads that were originally on these bodies, and apparently maybe Buckingham Palace (??) is in the background.  Amazing.

So this weekend we went to Khanom again.  This time we went because all of the Super English teachers went for a huge Halloween party at a bar on the beach.  It is (maybe?) owned by an expat and almost everyone there was foreign.  I had no idea there were so many white people in all of Thailand, LOL!  It was cool, there were tons of English teachers from other schools and everyone got dressed up and I got to watch as almost all of them got reeeeally drunk.  We also did some other cool things while we were in Khanom.  It's the height of rainy season and it's been really stormy out.  I'm sure you can tell by the pictures of the beach how choppy and crazy and huge the waves were!  Keep in mind, this is the SAME beach we were at last week, so the comparison is pretty crazy.  We went swimming in the water anyway, and it was still very very warm.  The undertow was crazy though!  It was really fun times!
Anneliese and Janet checkin' out the choppy surf!

I don't know if this picture really captures how crazy crazy crazy the waves were!

The boys were the first to head for the water!

We went in right after them!  It was awwwesome!

Look at this wicked cool preying mantis that attached itself to John and Janet's motorbike on our way back from dinner... which, by the way, was a REALLY good burger and fries at this place called Thai-Fi!

Our very talented makeup artist Anneliese applying her skills to the face of Mitch.

I can take NO credit for this!  Anneliese gave me the idea, the dress, AND did my makeup.  She is so awesome.  We were supposed to be silent film stars!  Even if people didn't get that much out of it, I looked wicked creepy and freaked everyone out for sure.

Ha!  Awesome!

Anneliese also turned Mitch into an awesome Sugar Skull!!!

And then somehow Janet, Anneliese and I decided a pyramid was a good idea.  LOL

Westside.  Janet looked so awesome... she was like a pop art picture.

Roomie Mike as Harry Potter!

Next day still mad choppy waters

Halloween breakfast on the beach!!!!!!!!

So now I reeeeally have wasted some time and have to go!  If you ever feel like making my day and sending me a letter, here is my address here!:

What's this best Saturday ever?!?!

Yesterday, which for me was Saturday Oct. 23rd, was a most amazing day.  Our Thai manager Wen took us to the beach in Khanom, and then to a fish spa (where the little fishies eat all of the dead skin off of you!) and to a beautiful Buddhist temple on top of a mountain overlooking the ocean... it was all so incredible.  I can't describe it in words, so here are some gorgeous pictures.
This is the beach in Khanom...

OMG doesn't it look like a postcard?

I got to swim in this water!  Amazing!

This is Wen!  She's great!

MMMM This was shrimp coconut curry!

Clearly it was good....  the iced tea was good too.

The view from where we were sitting.

Aaaaah I never get sick of these pictures!

I made the awesome (and potentially dangerous decision) to take my camera into the water...

Definitely turned out to be an awesome decision!

Anneliese found some majorly cool shells.

roomies Mike and Anneliese in the amazing water.

Wen fearlessly holding a Huuuuuge spider

Fish spa!  I don't know if you can see em...?

Ha!  This picture is amazing... Wen, Anneliese, and Mike gettin their toesies chomped on by some fish!

One of the many beautiful temple buildings...

Annnnd another one...

This might be my favorite picture so far.... from the top of the temple grounds looking down at the ocean.

We're wai-ing!
